Equipment

  • beverage shaker

Ingredients

  • 2 oz vanilla vodka
  • 1.25 oz coffee liqueur
  • 1/2 tsp black cocoa powder
  • 1 shot espresso cooled (or strong brewed coffee)
  • Ice for shaking
  • Black salt or black sugar for rim
  • 3 espresso beans for garnish
  • Small amount of water simple syrup, or coffee liqueur to adhere rim

Instructions

  • Rim your martini glass by dipping the rim in a small amount of liquid, then pressing it into black salt or black sugar on a flat plate. Set aside.
  • Pull one shot of espresso and allow it to cool for a few minutes.
  • Add black cocoa powder to your cocktail shaker. Add a small splash of coffee liqueur and stir to dissolve the cocoa so it does not clump.
  • Add ice to the shaker, filling it halfway.
  • Pour in the vanilla vodka, remaining coffee liqueur, and cooled espresso.
  • Seal the shaker and shake vigorously until your hands are cold and the shaker is sticking to your fingers. This should take at least 30 seconds of hard shaking.
  • Strain into the rimmed martini glass, pouring slowly to preserve the foam.
  • Place three espresso beans in the center of the foam as garnish. Serve immediately.
