I LOVE Christmas decorating. One of my favorite memories from my childhood was getting to go to my grandparents’ house and seeing all the festive decorations and I really found my passion for decorations.
While both my grandma’s had different decoration styles, they did show me that traditional decorations can be changed to fit what you might like in your home. They also showed me that decorations don’t just belong in the living room or family room.
In comes my Christmas kitchen!
When I say that Christmas makes me so unbelievably happy, I mean I love the spirit of kindness and giving. The music and the colors. The beautiful lights, but I really love my Christmas bows they are the perfect festive cabinet decorations. Here’s an old throw back picture of my home from before I made some of the updates that I had done and I have to say I’m so pleased with the evolution of my home.
Materials Needed for Christmas Cabinet Bows:
- Wired ribbon (thick and durable for that polished look)
- Large and small bows (perfect for mixing and matching—Hobby Lobby is my go-to!)
- Twist ties (for easy attachment)
- Packing tape (secures the ribbon without damaging your cabinets)
Now onto the bows, its really super simple. I recommend finding a thick ribbon that has wire to provide some structure, the wire also helps keep the bows in place.
I tried to put bows on every cabinet but I felt the look was very cluttered. So I downsized to an alternating pattern as you can see.
Step-by-Step Guide to Creating DIY Christmas Cabinet Bows
- Choose the Perfect Ribbon: Pick a festive wired ribbon that will hold its shape. This ribbon is what will make your Christmas cabinet bows stand out and look polished.
- Attach with Twist Ties: Secure each bow to the cabinet handles using twist ties. For a balanced look, mix large bows on top cabinets and smaller bows below.
- Secure the Ribbon: Cut ribbon strips to fit the length of each cabinet, and use packing tape to secure them at the top and bottom. This will keep your DIY cabinet bows in place all season without harming the cabinet finish.
- Finishing Touches: If covering every cabinet feels overwhelming, consider an alternating pattern. This approach keeps things festive without feeling too busy.
I got the large exterior bows from hobby lobby but any bow with a twist tie will work-or loop a twist tie through the back of the bow.
There are pre-made cabinet bow kits but I liked the larger full bows and the smaller ones for my shorter cabinets.
I use packing tape to secure the ribbon at the tops and bottoms of the cabinet faces because it holds to the ribbon material better and comes off fairly nicely as well. I’ve tried other styles of tape and didn’t find it to hold as well with my ribbons.
So. Grab ribbon, a couple bows, and some tape-and bring a little bit of extra holiday kitchen decor to your home!
